Polly- a 21st Century Love Story

The Other Palace.

This week I was fortunate to be invited to attend a workshop presentation of Polly! A 21st Century Love Story at The Other Palace.

Written by Natalie Durkin and Joe Tapper, Polly! A 21st Century Love Story is a heartwarming new British musical. It centres around Polly, a plus sized polyamorous woman and her a loving boyfriend and girlfriend, whilst she is grappling with the issue of telling her friends that she is polyamorous, and her friends are busy planning their wedding.

Throughout the musical, Polly is caught between wanting to live her true life, but also to not cause too many waves and disturbances. We see how social stigmas on queer people affect them, and also what happens when these pressures overwhelm and are not addressed.

With varied, catchy, and memorable songs and score, and funny, talented actors, I cannot wait to see what happens with this musical in the future. I think that it has a bright future ahead of it!

This was my first experience of a workshop environment, and I thoroughly enjoyed it – not least because the actors were so talented, but also because it was an interesting glimpse into how a musical or any piece of theatre, is devised and made. It was very special to be able to see a new musical being created too!
