What’s your dating horror story?
Everyone has one. Like that tinder date you went on where the guy showed up drunk and vomited on your new heels. Or that man you dated for a few months, only to run into him and his girlfriend as they were out to dinner.
Amber has a lot of stories like that. After being broken-up with by her no-good boyfriend Rob, Amber goes on a hunt for true love. She hasn’t dated for 10 years and has no idea what awaits her.
Charlie Mulliner’s new show, Love Hunt, takes us on a roller-coaster ride as our main character, Amber, looks to heal her broken heart and find someone that will love her, truly. Love Hunt is a hilarious commentary on modern dating and modern relationships. It’s comical and funny, and offers some interesting remarks on the emotional and domestic labour that women often have to bear. It’s also hopeful in its outlook to the future, a future in which women recognise their worth and can stand up for themselves. Love Hunt is a journey of self-discovery and self-love that warms the heart through and through.
Charlie Mulliner is a captivating performer. She can be funny, vulnerable, and brave, without ever losing the audience’s attention. The crowd work was impeccable as she responded incredibly well to the audience’s input. Everyone got a chance to contribute to the show, and yet the tempo never slowed down, the story kept galloping away at an exciting pace.
The show is incredibly diverse in its format and content. Every part of the story felt important and had something interesting to offer, so that there was never a dull moment. At every scene change, we could feel the trepidation thick in the air as we had no idea what was coming next- and our heads were continuously blown off by the originality of it all. Most of all, we could feel that Charlie Mulliner put all she had into this performance, and really embodied each character to the fullest. They all were unique and fascinating in their own way, and Mulliner’s acting made their personality shine bright.
Love Hunt was full of emotional ups and downs, as Amber struggles with her insecurities and tries to fight for her true love. The show built in intensity throughout its hour of run time, bringing it all together for the grand ending, which had everyone in the audience giggling and laughing with joy and excitement.
Charlie Mulliner gave me a night full of laughter that won’t be easy to forget. I cannot wait to see what she does next.
Love Hunt is currently playing at The Walrus until 25th May.
