Dorking Halls’ New Season
Dorking Halls’ autumn/winter brochure is now out! Whether you like ballet, drama, live music, top comics, historians or Basil Brush, you’ll find something to enjoy.
Milton Jones is cranking up the joke jukebox once more this October, telling a side-splitting tale of his madcap journey following in the footsteps of his great-uncle (who, er…looks suspiciously like Milton). Unlike previous shows it’s a story, but there are still lots and lots of ridiculous gags.
The top comics keep coming with comedian, broadcaster, journalist and chef Hardeep Singh Kohli in November with his new show Big Mouth Strikes Again. Devonian observationalist Josh Widdicombe arrives in December with his new show What Do I Do Now. The Last Leg star is keen share his annoyance at life’s many minor difficulties.
The renowned Russian State Ballet and Opera House perform three magnificent productions. First up is La Traviata in September, in which Giuseppe Verdi brings the beguiling splendour and gaiety of mid-19th century Paris to life on stage. Enchanting family production Swan Lake follows in November. This Tchaikovsky favourite about a princess who is turned into a swan by an evil curse features breathtaking dance and some of ballet’s most memorable music. In March see Puccini’s colourful and exotic Madam Butterfly.
For drama fans there’s Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap, famous for being the longest-running show in British theatre. The brilliantly intricate plot follows a group of people gathered in a country house. Cut off by snow they discover, to their horror, that there is a murderer in their midst.
Love live music? Catch Bob Geldof in September. Enjoy all the Boomtown Rats’ hits, including ‘I Don’t Like Mondays’ and ‘Rat Trap’, plus lots of Bob’s solo material.
For something a bit different, join Cornish folk group The Fisherman’s Friends for some rousing shanties this September. Prepare for a titanic range of sound, as the band draw from an established repertoire of traditional songs from around the world.
For the kids there’s the much anticipated panto, starring Eurovision Song Contest winner and Bucks Fizz Legend Jay Aston as Fairy Godmother and children’s TV favourite Gabrielle Green ‘Katrina from CBBC’s Wolfblood’ as Cinderella.
Our most loveable fox, the very cheeky Basil Brush, invades the Halls in October. Come on a journey of laughs, storytelling and song in a new fun-packed show.
For those with higher brows, David Starkey will talk about the Magna Carta in November. The UK’s leading constitutional historian, known for his forthright views, talks about the 13th century agreement that, imperfect though it was, limited for the first time the power of the monarch by stating the basic rights, privileges, and liberties of leading citizens and clergy.
All this and so much more.
