Even if, like me, you don’t know much about classical music, you will know the name Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and some of his music. For the month of August there is a new musical with book, music and lyrics by Charli Eglington playing at The Other Palace about the legendary composer. Co-Directed by Taylor Walker and Markus Olzinger, Saving Mozart introduces the young Mozart family. The domineering and ambitious father Leopold who instructs his daughter Nannerl and son Wolfie to become at a very young age, great pianists, composers and the toast of Europe.

Whilst Mozart was meant to be the protagonist, Saving Mozart is also a story about the, pardon the pun, instrumental women in his life, Nannerl who had to step away from her dreams, his supporting mother Anna Marie and wife Constanze.

Eglington also wrote the music and lyrics to the 20+ songs in the shows. The numbers are entertaining enough with a new romantic vibe enhanced by amazing vocals and clever choreography. However, I couldn’t help wondering, why Mozart’s own music didn’t feature more. After all, he has the most amazing back catalogue!

The simple monochrome set (Justin Williams) and semi period costumes (Julia Pschedezki) are a visual treat, particularly so when Mozart’s music brings forth a splash of colour.

Overall, it is an interesting story, but the narrative felt disjointed and without depth. I didn’t feel a connection to the characters, even when tragedy hit.  I would have liked to have come away from this production, not only knowing Mozart’s story but also caring about it. Unfortunately this didn’t happen. Saying that, it was a very pleasant evening and it is a lovely show to see if you want to learn a little about Mozart and his life.

Venue – The Other Palace

It is always very special seeing productions at ‘The Other Palace’. Just 5 minutes from Victoria Station is perfect for those of us who live in the South East. This intimate theatre has excellent sight lines and comfortable seating, offering good value for money.
