The Horsham Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society return to the Capitol in their 60th Anniversary year with their stunning production of ‘Hello, Dolly’ from 11th – 15th November, a fun filled show that is perfect for the whole family.
Set in New York at the turn of the century, the charismatic and popular match maker Dolly Levi is tasked with finding a suitable second wife for tight fisted Horace Vandergelder, a half a millionaire from Yonkers. Little does he know though, that she has her sights set on him herself and works situations to her advantage so she can get her man and ‘spread his money out amongst the people like rainwater’ as her beloved late husband taught her. On her way she also encourages love to bloom between Vandergelder’s shop clerk, Cornelius Hackl, and Irene Molloy, and their friends Barnaby Tucker and Minnie Fay, with hilarious consequences. It features well knows musical numbers such as ‘Elegance’, ‘Put on Your Sunday Clothes’, ‘Before the Parade Passes By’ and of course ‘Hello, Dolly!’, some of which people will recognise from the animated film Wall-E.
HAODS Chairman Barry Syder says ‘Hello, Dolly! is a hugely popular musical, funny, farcical and hugely entertaining . It was made famous by the 1969 film starring Barbra Streisand and the original musical with Carol Channing and it’s the perfect show for us to be staging for our 60th anniversary…a diamond Dolly in our diamond year! It showcases everything that HAODS does best, and with our hugely talented cast and crew, this show promises to live up to our reputation of being comparable to a West End production.’
Incorporating the extremely high production values that HAODS are renowned for, as shown in their previous popular productions of ‘Sweeney Todd ‘ and ‘The Sound of Music’, ‘Hello, Dolly!’ will feature stunning sets and props, professional lighting and sound, and beautifully designed costumes, some of which are designed and hand made by talented costume designer, Eddy Willsher. It is touches like this that set HAODS apart from other societies and the talent of passionate and loyal members that enable them to produce the best possible productions.
This is director Barrie Ward’s second outing with HAODS, his first being ‘Guys & Dolls’ back in 2012. He says ‘HAODS is my favourite society to direct for, they just goes from strength to strength. Horsham is very lucky to have such a professional company it can call its own.
