Derren Brown – Only Human
Apollo Theatre
Running until January 30th 2027
Only Human, ironically named because its awe seems to defy almost all human logic, is the latest instalment from Illusionist, mentalist and master showman Derren Brown.
His new show, having toured across the UK, has found its home in the classic Apollo Theatre in the West End of London, a beautiful space steeped in tradition, history and splendour, where it will run until January 2027.
As we’re under strict instructions not to reveal any key moments from the show, I shall instead share a taste of the experience to tantalise your tastebuds.
Having been lucky enough to see three of his previous live creations, Svengali, Miracle and Showman I found his latest venture did everything but disappoint. Constantly pushing the parapet of the shock factor and grandeur of his spectacles, this production featured more audience participation than I’ve seen before, getting down to the real nitty-gritty tricks and wow moments that didn’t leave the audience resting on their seats for long, and giving those who wished to participate plenty of opportunities to feel part of something special.
Each tour features a centralised theme, often a person or belief of significant historical value that influenced the course of history, interweaving into the overarching themes of the story, where we’re treated to fascinatingly insightful chronicles and concepts that are often eventually challenged by the showman himself, I shall not give away any spoilers on that subject, just know that what unfolds is enthralling.
Only Human is a rollercoaster of emotions. Brown’s charm and humour fill the room with genuine warmth and laughter all evening, without taking away from the sincerity of his storytelling, his psychological teachings or his moments of shock and wonder. He controls the room like a master manipulator, building tension and fear when needed, with brain-shattering hypnotism and jaw-dropping dramatisation aplenty.
This balance of narrative and spectacle is driven in no small part by multi-BAFTA and Olivier award-winning long-time Director and Co-Writer Andrew O’Connor, who has worked on all of Derren Brown’s TV shows and theatre productions, along with support from long-term co-writer Stephen Long.
You can expect all of the bells and whistles from this West End production. The slick design of the set by Simon Higlett features huge-screen visuals that enclose the stage. With video design by Simon Wainwright and Illusion Concepts by Paul Kieve, together they create a technological joy that is highly-engaging, playful and devastatingly effective to ensure the audience never misses a beat. Sharp lighting by Charlie Morgan Jones ensures the focus of the production is crystal clear, with sinister blackouts aplenty, creating a sense of unease that kept us on the edge of our seats.
Only Human brings to light our own humanity, while empowering our beliefs and ambitions as audience members. Its underlying message is one of inspiration, with reminders to be present with our aspirations, reinforcing the idea that we have the power to be the changes we desire here and now. As always, Derren Brown pushes the limits of what it really means to be human. If you’ve never had the pleasure of experiencing this phenomenon, there’s never been a better time to buy a ticket. And if you have, then multiply your expectations, because Derren Brown is back in town.
