WHO IS OSCAR? | The Hawth Studio Crawley | Thurs 6th Nov

This exclusive screening of Within Our Gates, the 1920 Silent film, will introduce you to the work of prolific African-American filmmaker Oscar Micheaux (1884-1951), director and producer of over 40 films and 7 novels.

Oscar’s seminal film will be accompanied by a live soundtrack from WOMAD international award-winning musician Saidi Kanda. This will be followed by a screening of a short film on Oscar’s life made by Tim Reid of Legacy Media Institute, revealing his significance and his achievements that still resonate today.

The whole occasion will be presented to you by host and spoken word artist Elmi Ali.

Oscar Micheaux was the first African-American to produce a feature-length film (The Homesteader, 1919) and a sound feature film (The Exile, 1931). His films were a challenge to segregation featuring non-stereotyped black characters; they also frequently addressed more controversial issues.

This promises to be a fascinating evening of film, music and spoken word.

Who is Oscar? will be broadcast Thursday 6 November 7pm, The Hawth Studio Crawley

Tickets: £7 (Discounts: £6)
